The Five Greatest NFL Teams In The History Of Football

Sunday, August 31st, 2008
Rick Grantham asked:

While a lot of people may contest and debate the five greatest NFL teams in the history of football as listed here, everyone will agree that these were awesome teams that deserve the honor and accolade one way or another.
__________________________________________________________________
1985 Chicago Bears

The 1985 Chicago Bears was a phenomenal team composed of a mismatched group with raw and exciting energy and interesting personalities. They were great and they knew it, recording their championship video, “The Super Bowl Shuffle” even before playoffs started. Led by the Mohawk-wearing quarterback Jim “Punky QB” McMahon and an impenetrable running and defense line, chief of them William “The Refrigerator” Perry, Super Bowl MVP defensive end Richard Dent, and NFL Defensive Player of the Year Mike Singletary, the Bears finished the season with a 15-1 record and scored a total of 456 to 198 points. During the playoffs they won 21-0 against the giants and 24-0 against the rams for the NFC title. They won the Super Bowl, scoring 46-10 over the Patriots.

1972 Miami Dolphins

The 1972 Miami Dolphins is the only NFL team that ever had a “perfect season,” with a season record of 17-0. This is also the reason why they are considered as the greatest NFL team of all time, particularly by the documentary America’s Game: The Super Bowl Champions, produced by the NFL Network. Their undefeated team was led by coach Don Shula and football greats such as Earl Morrall, Bob Griese, and Larry Csonka. They won all three playoff games and finally won the Super Bowl VII against the Redskins. Some argue however that the ‘72 Dolphins had the advantage of playing one of the easiest schedules in the history of modern NFL, and this when equally matched with the ‘85 Bears, they were no contender.

1962 Green Bay Packers

A dream team consisting of a list of football hall of famers including Paul Hornung, Max McGee, Jim Taylor, Boyd Dowler, and Vince Lombardi, the 1962 Green Bay Packers set a 13-1 record earning them a first place at the Western Conference. In the NFL Championship Game, they won 16-7 against the New York Giants, marking the Packers’ 8th NFL Championship.

1991 Washington Redskins

The 1991 Washington Redskins topped the NFL in two important stats: the yards gained per pass and yards allowed per pass, with star player Mark Rypien averaging a whopping 8.5 yards per attempt, gaining a total of 1,340 yards on 70 receptions. The additional contributions of Redskins’ Ricky Ervins and Earnest Byner with a combined 1,708 yards make their stats legendary. Even with a tough schedule, they were able to outscore their opponents 485-224.

1999 St. Louis Rams

One of the most exciting personalities in the 1999 season was then barely-known night-shift grocery-clerk and St. Louis Rams’ star quarterback, Kurt Warner who led the Rams to a record of 13-3 in the regular-season. He was both NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP. The Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans in the Super Bowl XXXIV with a score of 23-16, and claimed their 1st NFL World Championship since 1951.

Jacksonville Falls to the Perfect Patriots

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008
John Turvik asked:

Another victim has fallen once again to the Patriots after Jacksonville loses 31-20 in Foxboro. Tom Brady was almost perfect in this game going 26-of-28 for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns. He started off the game going 16 for 16, a single game postseason record, to break Phil Simms record for completion percentage in a game. Brady stayed very calm throughout the game and calmly took what the soft Jacksonville cover game him. The Jaguars where unable to pressure Brady into any interceptions as they pretty much stayed with their base front four rushing him in passing situations.
__________________________________________________________________
Jacksonville was so worried about giving up the big play to Randy Moss that they kept their safeties deep all game leaving the short routes wide open for Brady to hit eight different receivers and have an almost perfect passing percentage. Jack Del Rio never adjusted his defense all game long and ended up paying the price for it. Even though Jacksonville was in this game throughout, you never got the sense that they could get a lead on the Patriots.

Free Sports Picks - Sports Locks

New England played error free football with no interceptions, no fumbles and winning the time of possession. Jacksonville on the other hand ended up with two turnovers both coming from David Garrard whom threw one and fumbled one. The only way Jacksonville was winning this game was if they two played error free and found a way to use their running game to keep New England off the field.

The league’s second-most productive duo during the regular season combined for just 66 yards. It ended up being the Patriots whom dominated the running game as Laurence Maroney rushed for 122 yards, including a 1 yard touchdown. The Patriots game played out in almost identical fashion as the Green Bay- Seattle game that played before. Green Bay dominated the running game as well as the time of possession while the Seahawks only got 20 yards on the ground from their star running back. In both games the underdog team forgot the run very early in the game which ended up being the downfall of them. Once the run was left behind it gave the opposing defenses the advantage by allowing them to drop more people into coverage.

Norv Tuner will have to learn from the mistakes that Jacksonville made if he’s going to have a shot next weekend. LaDanian Tomlinson and quarterback Phillip Rivers where both injured during Sunday’s contest against the Indianapolis Colts. It will be very interesting to see how Norv Turner game plans for the Patriots if these two starts cant’s compete. The only way San Diego will have a chance against the Patriots is if they can stick to the running game throughout the contest. New England going into the Jacksonville game was allowing 4.4 yards on the ground and most of those yards where right up the gut of New England’s line.

Free Sports Picks - Sports Locks

The Patriots failed to cover the -13.5 point spread against the Jags, but the total did just go over 49 by posting a combined total of 51. New England has had trouble covering these big spreads especially in the second half of the season. This should be a big heads-up for handicappers when it comes time for their bout against the San Diego Chargers. Their’s plenty of football left to be played and it will be a test for the Patriots next week as they host the Chargers. Lets see if Tom Brady and the New England Patriots can continue to play error free football and stay down the path to a perfect season.

Looking Forward to a New Season of the New England Patriots?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008
Payton Brooks asked:

There are folks out there who have strong feelings about the New England Patriots. Some of them love the team - they are still celebrating the Super bowl victories, thinking about the Adam Vinatieri game winning kick in a blizzard to secure a playoff win. Other people are way on the opposite end of the spectrum. Rather than thinking that the New England Patriots are one of the greatest teams out there, they’ve got a dozen reasons why the Pats are insignificant - most often, the item topping their list is going to be last season’s spygate scandal.

Whether you love the New England Patriots or you wish they would drop out of the NFL altogether, one thing that you are going to discover quickly is that they’re still a talking point. When it comes to football, when it comes to chatting things over at the water cooler come Monday morning at the office, the New England Patriots are going to come up.

On one hand, talk about the New England Patriots is going to be focused on Tom Brady - on his potential injuries, on whom he is dating and on whether or not he’s played his best game. Others are going to be focusing on Bill Belichick and whether or not he is doing the best possible job as a coach - as well as focusing on the rest of the coaching staff of the New England Patriots. Others are going to be talking about passing yards, rushing plays, touchdown passes as well as those who came up against the offense and defense.

Ultimately, those who are watching the New England Patriots games - whether they are hoping that Brady and his team win or lose - are going to find that there’s something unexpected each week. It may be a matter of waiting to see what the commentators have to say; it might be able looking into the plays that are being made and trying to determine whether or not the calls that were made were the right ones.

The NFL season has not yet begun - though it will happen soon enough - and yet fans of the game are already talking. After watching pre-season practice sessions, pre-season games and as newscasters start covering the stories on the evening news or in the local papers, the notion that the New England Patriots’ season is about to begin is something that has a lot of people thinking about tailgating parties, about getting together with friends and about seeing what happens from one week to the next.

Whether you are looking forward to a new season played by the New England Patriots or other favorite teams or you just are looking forward to seeing what everybody else has to talk about, the football season is about to begin and, for many, that’s the most exciting thing that’s happened since, well, the Super bowl last February (though, perhaps for some New England Patriots fans, that’s still a sore subject) - here’s to a brand new season that’s coming right around the corner.

Wait – a – Minute, Run That Back…

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008
Jason Henry asked:

I am one of the biggest NFL fans on the face of this planet. I am an even bigger Dallas Cowboys fan. But the NFL shield isn’t as shiny to me anymore; not as glamorous. The sparkly shield the NFL so proudly display’s now has a little rust and few dents in it all because of one man. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Since being named to the NFL’s highest post Goodell has gained a reputation for being a tough; no non-sense type of guy. (Think Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson, Michael Vick and Chris Henry) According to Goodell; he wants to change the image of the National Football League. So if anyone compromises the integrity of the league, expect an immense punishment.

Well, maybe that does not apply for everyone. (Think Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots)

True Michael Vick compromised the league’s integrity by fighting dogs, lying to the commish and pleading guilty to dog fighting charges. True Pacman Jones did the same by just simply getting into trouble. Over and over and over and over and over again. Yet these actions happened away from the football field. So if a person or team compromises the leagues integrity (I keep repeating compromise and integrity because this is what Mr. Goodell stresses) on the field, what will Commissioner Goodell do?

Well, Goodell had his chance to expound upon his mission. When New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was accused of video taping his opponents (opponents is in plural form because he has been accused of this more than once) defensive signals; he stated that he “misinterpreted league rules” when questioned about. The NFL was able to obtain video of the incident; which proved Belichick was indeed cheating. This is one of the most blatant cases of cheating in recent memory. There is no way in this world that Goodell would not suspend Belichick and fine him an amount that Bill Gates could feel.

But, I was wrong. The Patriots were docked a couple of draft picks, well possibly. If the team makes the playoffs this year (Patriots are currently 4-0), then the Pats are forced to give up two first round picks next year. Now let’s check the fine. Belichick-$500,000; Patriots organization-$250,000.

………..

Silence is my only response.

The Atlanta Falcons are attempting to recoup $16 million dollars from the $22 million dollar signing bonus the team gave Michael Vick. Hmmm… So if Vick compromised the league’s integrity and was suspended indefinitely for doing so, why not the same treatment for Belichick? Is it because Belichick has won 3 Super Bowls? Maybe because the Patriots are the toast of the NFL and can do no wrong in the leagues eyes? Or is simply because of dreamy quarterback Tom Brady? What about this one. Could it possibly be about race?

While I only resort to bringing race into the equation when it is blatant, this one is pretty close. Vick-black, Pacman-black, Tank-black, Chris Henry-black. All fined and suspended by Goodell for bad behavior and compromising the league’s integrity. Belichick-white. Not suspended, but fined $500,000 for compromising the league’s integrity.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb stated that black quarterbacks are un-fairly criticized and face more pressure than their white counterparts. Goodell’s treatment of Belichick and the Patriots gives merit to McNabb’s comments. While McNabb was right in his statement; I took more than just quarterbacks being un-fairly criticized in the media from what he said. Lovie Smith took the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl for first time since 1985 last season, yet the Bears were hesitant to give him a new contract.

This is why race is often mentioned when a situation such as this one arises. This is why African-Americans sometimes feel as if they are still on the outside looking in. This is why William Rhoden named his latest book Forty-Million Dollar Slaves.

Roger Goodell is not living up to the expectations that he set for the league. Why is this one situation separate from the other if they both compromise the league’s integrity? Goodell is still fresh in the game and still has a long way to go. So he has time to make up for his blunder in New England. I only hope that those dents in the shield don’t erode into permanent holes.
